ProtectingZambia’s ground.And building on it.

The gap we close

A report does notrehabilitate land.

In Zambia the environmental consultant and the civil contractor are almost always two different firms. The assessment specifies a silt trap, a lined drain, a rehabilitated haul road — then the file is handed to whoever wins the works tender, who was not in the room when the commitment was made.

Canopy holds both mandates. We are accredited by ZEMA to prepare the assessment, by the Minerals Regulation Commission to audit the liability, and registered with the National Council for Construction to build the mitigation — one firm from the field survey to the handover certificate.

What we do

Three divisions.One accountability.

Each division answers to a different regulator. Together they cover the full life of a project.

Environmental Assessment

Assessment and permitting work prepared to ZEMA submission standard — from screening brief through to an approved monitoring plan.

We scope the study, run the baseline field programme, model the impacts and carry the document through review. Public consultation, stakeholder registers and decommissioning provisions are built into the assessment rather than appended to it.

Mining Compliance & EPF Audit

Environmental Protection Fund audits signed by an MRC-accredited competent person, with the liability arithmetic laid out line by line.

The EPF assessment decides what a licence holder posts as security. We inspect the disturbed footprint, quantify rehabilitation liability against current rates, and present a defensible figure the Commission and the operator can both work from.

Civil Works Implementation

Licensed construction capacity, so the mitigation an assessment recommends can actually be built by the firm that specified it.

Most consultancies hand over a report and leave. Our NCC Grade 6 registration in categories C, R and MC lets us carry the drainage, the water supply, the haul road or the containment structure through to commissioning — under the same accountability as the assessment.
